Coaching Staff

Our coaching philosophy is always to have fun and be safe.  Children also learn in a supportive environment, smaller class sizes and an emphasis on the individual needs of each student help foster success in our students.  In addition to group classes and race coaching, our staff provides private and semi-private instruction for adults and children.

Adrienne Patterson     Sailing Director
 
Adrienne Patterson has been sailing since the age of five. Coaching and teaching has always been her passion, and she has years of experience working at numerous yacht clubs and as a private coach. During her years at St. Mary’s College, she competed on the Varsity Sailing Team participating in all four ICSA Women’s Nat'l Championships and a Team Race Championship. In 2007, Adrienne had the honor of being named the Quantum Female Sailor of the Year.  She was also named the Women's Athlete of the Year for St. Mary's College in 2007. Adrienne received a Master of the Arts in Teaching in 2008.  Last Fall, Adrienne competed in the Women's 470 class, but she has currently shifted her focus to Olympic Women's Match Racing.

Diunieski Gutierrez     Advanced Fleet Coach
 
Diunieski Gutierrez is originally from Cuba, but he came to Miami, Florida three years ago.  He has been sailing since he was eight years old in the Optimist dinghy, which is where he quickly realized that sailing is his passion.  Diunieski, also known as "Koky", has been sailing seriously and competitively in the Laser since then. He received a gold medal in the nationals, and as a result he was asked to be a part of the Cuban National Team in 1996. He competed for four years in the Central American games in Maracaibo in 1998, and the Pan American Games in Winnipeg in 1999.  He graduated from college in 2004 with a degree in physical education.  He has been coaching Optimists and Lasers for nine years.

Rebecca Heus     Youth Sailing Coach
 
Rebecca Heus began sailing at age six on the Long Island Sound. She has sailed and raced Optimists, Blue Jays, and 420s. Rebecca graduated from Hamilton College last May with a Bachelor's Degree in Comparative Literature. While at Hamilton, Rebecca sailed with the Hamilton College Sailing Club, although the upstate New York climate did not allow for many months of sailing. Upon graduating, Rebecca moved to Miami looking for sunshine! Rebecca has spent many summers as a sailing instructor, swim instructor, and camp counselor. She is excited to work with the young sailors of KBYC.

Dana Kamilar     Youth Sailing Coach
 
Dana Kamilar has been a youth sailing instructor at Coral Reef Yacht Club for 8 years. She has coached Green Fleet and run a beginning Learn to Sail program. She is a Miami native who grew up sailing the waters of Biscayne Bay. Dana just recently graduated from UNC Chapel Hill where she was on her college club sailing team. She is eager to work with kids at KBYC and excited to instill her knowledge with the young Sea Squirt sailors.
